Japan

Land of the rising sun

Discover the real Japan

Japan is a country known for its distinctive culture and unique traditions. A culture of contrasts like nowhere else in the world. For instance, it is one of the most technologically advanced countries, yet is intimately connected to its ancient heritage and deep spiritual traditions. Have you seen the movie called “Memoirs of a Geisha” ? In the movie, there is a scene where the young Chiyo ran through many red torii gates to give money for prayer at Fushimi-Inari shrine. Along with the background music, it is one of the most beautiful and visually stunning moments in the film. As simple as it sounds, it’s the reason why I was so intrigued with Japan and its culture since young.

Leaving Tokyo metropolis lies multi-tiered pagodas and torii gates, sit shrouded by misty forests and tumbling waterfalls. From sacred Shinto shrines and temples to traditional tea ceremonies and ancient rituals, you name it all. The greatest aspect about Japan is having 4 distinctive seasons, each with its own unique charm, beauty and celebration. I personally love autumn the most where the whole country is surrounded with crimson yellow leaves.

I had visited many prefectures, but the one I felt in love with the most is Kyoto, the spiritual heart of Japan. Kyoto was the capital of Japan thousand years ago and is unaffected by the both World Wars. As such, many grand ancient structures such as temples and Shinto still remain. It is also the city richest in Japanese culture. Walking around Kyoto you can see people dress in Kimono, mysterious and elegant geisha walking around the streets of Gion and traditional festivals celebrated throughout each seasons. Traveling to Kyoto is a true discovery and appreciation of Japan’s rich spiritual history.

Having been to Japan several times, it is a country I truly love. There’s so much to do, see and love about this country.
